With a population of a larger European city suburb (650.000), Montenegro is an enchanting little country full of extreme geographical diversities.
Great mountains with snow peaks, steep fiord-like hills almost vertically diving into the Adriatic Sea, mountain lakes full of fish, mystical monasteries carved in the solid rock, sandy and sunny beaches that go on for miles alongside the coast. That is all Montenegro.
It’s easy to reach a Montenegro from Dubrovnik.
We start our tour from Dubrovnik driving south alongside the Adriatic coast passing the cities of Cavtat and Konavle region and soon cross the border to Montenegro (do not forget your passports). We drive alongside the Kotor bay (Europe’s most southern fiord) passing the cities Igalo, Herceg Novi (two great Turkish, later Venetian fortresses), Bijela, Kamenari, pausing for a photo-stop in front of magical Perast – city of seamen and 2 small islands with churches (St. George and Our Lady of the Rocks/Gospa od Škrpjela). We continue through Risan, stop at Perast while the guide points out major buildings and explains its rich history, finally reaching the city of Kotor, nested at the very bottom of Kotor bay and surrounded by formidable verticals of neighboring mountains.
We stop in Kotor where you will have a time to explore the city (Venetian Palaces, Orthodox Church, St. Triphon- Kotor’s protector Catholic church, massive city walls, St. John fortress – 300 meters vertical from Kotor (optional) by yourself.
After lunch in Kotor we drive through Vrmac tunnel to the outer coastal part with long beaches and open sea reaching Budva. It is one of the oldest cities in the whole Adriatic with a charming 16ct. center, and marina for mega yachts. Today Budva is a top tourist destination for younger travelers with all the fun it offers.
After Budva we start our return not going alongside Kotor Bay but instead taking a ferry crossing, stopping along the way for photos and refreshments, crossing the border to Croatia and reaching Dubrovnik in the late afternoon/evening hours.
