Located less than 35 km from Dubrovnik (22 miles) Trebinje area in Bosnia and Hercegovina is a world of its own, completely different than the coastal area of Dubrovnik Riviera. Limestone hills, small fertile pockets of land following the Trebišnjica river flow, flocks of sheep and goats grazing, and endless fields of vineyards will capture your imagination instantaneously.
Departing Dubrovnik we cross the Bosnian border in 20 min time and after a short drive overlooking the islands in front of Dubrovnik and through the Friar’s field we reach the town of Trebinje. We start by driving up to the top of Gracanica hill above Trebinje for great panoramic views of the city. Here, our guide can explain to you the geography of the area and show all the spots that you will visit during the tour. A visit to the Orthodox monastery of Gracanica standing at the top of the hill is also possible.
We drive a further 5 km away to the 15ct Orthodox monastery of Tvrdos where monks have been producing wine for centuries until they blew up the monastery when it was about to be taken over by the Ottomans in 18ct. We will visit their church and ancient cellars and taste some of their best white and red wine accompanied by cow cheese cured in olive oil by the monks. Your guide will explain the wines and the current hard-working monk lifestyle.
After tasting monks’ wine, we will drive down to the center of Trebinje town, where your guide will take you on a short historical walk through its Austrian (19ct) and Turkish (18ct) Trebinje center. We will stop in the heart of the fortified Turkish Old Town in a small restaurant by the flowing waters of Trebišnjica river where we will taste their cheese with walnuts/kaymak cheese, homemade prosciutto, and fried dough balls, paired with their home-brewed beer or local wines (Zilavka, Vranac, Rose) overlooking ducks and geese swimming by.
Ultimately we will get back in the vehicle and drive 8 kilometers (5 miles) out to the hills beyond Trebinje to the village of Tuli. There we stop in a family-owned restaurant serving traditional domestic Bosnian food. We will have 2-course lunch accompanied by homemade wine and liqueurs. Lunch will include a selection of their locally grown meat (lamb or veal), fish (trout), or vegetarian, and one of their delicious desserts (homemade apple pie or Turkish baklava). Lunch will be paired with family homemade white or red wine or locally produced (bottled) beer with fruit liqueur or grappa or Turkish coffee at the end.
After dinner, we drive back to Dubrovnik (around 40-60 min drive depending on border crossing) and you will be back in the hotel/apartment, just after sunset.
